Nr. Lyngby – where the sea is getting closer
|
|
There's not much left of the former fishing village of Nr. Lyngby, but the village still has something interesting to offer: Uninhibited views of the North Sea, an old churchyard, the remains of the old coastal road between Lønstrup and Nr. Lyngby, perfect conditions for paragliders and exciting opportunities for divers.
|
At the edge of the sea - with an uninhibited view of the North Sea - is Nr. Lyngby, which began its existence as a small fishing village. Not much remains of the fishing industry, and indeed not much remains of the original village.
Old churchyard intactThe old church was demolished in 1913, when the edge of the cliff and the sea had reached a distance of just 20 metres from the churchyard's embankment, and moved around 800 metres inland.
A large part of the old churchyard is intact with a number of graves, a thatched campanile with a very rusty cast iron bell from 1872.
If you walk on the beach and look up at the cliffs, you can see the marks in the soil where the coffins lay whilst the churchyard was still in use. Many graves were moved to the new churchyard further inland.

Eatery demolished in 1975At the beginning of the previous century the mill, Nr. Lyngby Mølle, was built. Initially it was use as an eatery, but later became a gathering place for the local population. In 1975 a decision was made to demolish the venue as the greedy sea also appeared to want to have a bite of the popular restaurant.
At the same time, the coastal road between Nr. Lyngby and Lønstrup was relocated. This road is now just a short stretch of broken asphalt that shows which way the road used to run. The sea erodes 3-4 m of the cliff every year, which means that something that's there this year may no longer be there the following year.
Nr. Lyngby is a favourite destination for paragliders thanks to the 30-40-metre-high dune, but the raw nature of the area is also an attraction in itself.

Remains of wrecks must be delivered to the museumIn the sea between Nr. Lyngby and the church at Mårup lies the wreck of "The Crescent", an English frigate that was lost in 1808.
It's said that there are many interesting finds around the wreck: Uniform buttons, coins and other items.
However, if when diving around the wreck of "The Crescent", you are fortunate enough to find something, please remember to deliver it to the museum so that others also have the opportunity to see your find.
